Mattress Construction

The Vaya Hybrid is built from a cotton-based cover fabric and two layers of foam of different density levels with a coil system in between. These four layers make the mattress 14'' thick.

The layers of the Vaya Hybrid

Cover layer: 2'' of plush and breathable quilted cotton fabric facilitating moisture wicking and assisting in cooling the mattress.

Comfort Layer: 2" of proprietary Vaya Foam — a special poly foam designed to combine contouring with bounce. This foam is manufactured with the use of open-cell technology aimed at reducing heat retention.

Support Layer: 8" individually wrapped steel coils. The coils are reinforced on the perimeter to make the edges of the mattress more resistant to sinkage.

Base Layer: 2" of highly dense poly foam supporting the coils as they compress and increasing the mattress' overall structural integrity.

Feel

The soft and highly breathable quilted cotton cover of the Vaya Hybrid gives a soft and sleek sensation while neutralizing body heat and wicking it away keeping the surface of the mattress cool and dry.

The Vaya Foam in the comfort layer offers the benefits of memory foam and latex without actually using these materials. It enables moderate sinking which cradles the body and enhances comfort while at the same time provides sleepers with pleasant bounce. The coils beneath generate lift supporting sleepers and making them feel stable lying on the mattress.

All in all, the combination of contouring, bounce and support give the mattress a medium feel.

Pressure Relief

The Vaya Hybrid works well for side sleepers of all weights. The contouring Vaya Foam will cushion their hips and shoulders preventing the accumulation of pressure. The bounce this foam provides in addition to the lift generated by the coil system will elevate these sensitive areas in their body keeping their back properly aligned.

Back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will also like the Vaya Hybrid. The body conforming properties of the Vaya Foam plus its responsiveness will enable them to benefit from the right amount of sinkage necessary for relieving pressure in their thoracic and lumbar spine without plunging too much into the mattress. The coils layer below will further reduce sinking delivering the support they need to maintain a healthy sleep position.

Back sleepers weighing more than 250 pounds will most likely not feel comfortable lying on the Vaya Hybrid. The mattress' medium firmness level can't properly cope with their heavy body, which may lead to excess sinking, the accumulation of pressure and pain.

The Vaya Hybrid's medium feel is a good fit for lightweight stomach sleepers. The Vaya Foam in the comfort layer will wrap their abdomen area alleviating pressure in their lower back. The bounce provided by this foam side by side with the support of the coils will keep these sleepers 'on' the mattress instead of 'in' it.

Stomach sleepers who are heavier than 150 pounds, especially those who weigh close and more than 250 pounds, will suffer from excess sinking in the area below their rib cage and from consequent discomfort and pain in the mid and low sections of their spine. They'll need a mattress initially designed for plus-size people.

Motion Isolation

Although the Vaya Foam in the Vaya Hybrid's comfort layer conforms to sleepers' body quite well and can absorb a large portion of the kinetic energy generated by their movements, its greater responsiveness compared to memory foam will transfer some of that energy across the mattress making the other sleeper feel it.

The coils are individually wrapped and can isolate motion better than an innerspring system, but they still transfer more motion compared to all-foam mattresses.

Taking all these factors into consideration, the Vaya Hybrid exhibits mediocre capacity for motion isolation. It may be enough for most people, but light sleepers or sleepers whose partner tends to move a lot at night may need a more cushy mattress with better motion isolation.

Repositioning

The Vaya Hybrid scores high when it comes to ease of movement. The bounce delivered by the responsive Vaya Foam in the comfort layer and the 8'' coils enable sleepers to change their sleeping positions without exerting too much effort.

As mentioned above, back and stomach sleepers who weigh more than 250 pounds won't be supported well enough by the mattress and as a result may find it harder to maneuver on its surface.

Edge Support

The Vaya Hybrid's edge support is superior to most other hybrid mattresses with the same firmness level. The responsive and bouncy Vaya Foam in the comfort layer makes its contribution, but the main reason for the stable edges is the reinforced coils around the exterior of the support layer and the hardened poly foam in the base layer, which adds durability to the mattress as a whole.

Practically speaking, sleepers can lie close to the mattress' edge and feel secure. This increases their potential sleeping space.

Heat Retention

The Vaya Hybrid is designed for efficient temperature regulation. The breathable cover wicks moisture away and prevents the accumulation of hot spots on the mattress surface. The open-cell technology utilized in the manufacturing process of the Vaya Foam reduces heat retention. Lastly, the coils enable free circulation of air in and out of the mattress cooling the comfort layer above.

Put differently, the Vaya Hybrid is a smart choice for people who tend to sleep hot or for people residing in the hotter and more humid regions of the country.

Frame and Foundation

The Vaya Hybrid is compatible with the majority of the foundations, frames and adjustable bases you'll find on the market. Vaya manufactures and sells its own Vaya Platform Bed. This platform is easy to assemble. It's built from solid hardwood and consists of wide slats delivering strong support while at the same time enabling air to flow freely and cool the mattress. Its prices range from $399 for a Twin mattress to $599 for a California King mattress.

The Vaya Platform is shipped anywhere within the lower 48 states for free. It'll arrive at your doorstep in up to 5 business days. It also comes with a 1-year full-replacement warranty, which covers manufacturing defects and faulty workmanship.

Additional Details

Vaya sells a limited range of products comprised of two mattresses (the Vaya hybrid and the Vaya all-foam), a pillow and a platform bed described above. All these products are manufactured in Arizona. They exhibit a plain design side by side with high quality, which together accurately reflect the company's motto: choosing a simpler and highly affordable route to a good night's sleep.

Vaya's mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified indicating their foam doesn't contain any substances which may endanger human health or threaten the environment, for instance ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates and heavy metals. The company also applies strict procedures aimed at reducing the emissions of volatile organic compounds so as to make sure its customers breathe clean indoor air.

Shipping and Delivery

The Vaya Hybrid will be delivered to your ground-level door wrapped in plastic, rolled and compressed in a 19'' * 19" * 42.5'' box in up to 15 business days. You'll have to carry the box to the room where you plan to put the mattress, unpack it and set up the mattress. The company doesn't offer white glove delivery.

Shipping to any destination within the the lower 48 states is free of charge. Shipping outside the contiguous USA requires the paid services of a freight forwarder you'll have to choose and coordinate with.

Return & Warranty

The Vaya Hybrid comes with a 100-night trial and a break in period of 30 nights. In other words, if you're not satisfied with the mattress, you can return it and expect a full refund 30 nights from the moment you got it and no later than 100 nights. If you return the mattress within the 30-night break in period, you'll have to pay a processing fee of $99.

The mattress is sold with a 10-year warranty. The warranty applies to the original buyer only. It stipulates that he company will replace the mattress at its own expense (expect for labor and shipping costs) in cases of defects in materials and manufacturing including indentations on the surface of the mattress deeper than 1''.

The Bottom Line

Innovative design and smart use of materials enable the Vaya Hybrid to offer sleepers the best of both worlds. That is, the special Vaya Foam the mattress' comfort layer is made of, on the one hand, contours their body effectively relieving pressure and, on the other hand, provides a bouncy feel, which, together with the coils below, generates lift and support necessary for a good and healthy night's sleep.

The mattress has additional strengths. It's responsive, and so moving on its surface is easy. It's edges are highly stable. It also exhibits improved capacity for heat dissipation. No less important, despite its numerous benefits, it's sold at a price which won't put a heavy burden on your budget.

FAQ

Where is the Vaya Hybrid manufactured?

Much like the Vaya all-foam, the Vaya Hybrid is manufactured in Arizona. Vaya's other products, its pillow and platform bed, are manufactured in the same place.

How do I set up the Vaya Hybrid?

The Vaya Hybrid will be delivered to you wrapped in plastic, rolled and compressed in a box. Carry the box to the room you've designated for the mattress. Unpack the mattress, place it on its foundation and unroll it. Take off the plastic to let the mattress expand. After 4-6 hours, it'll reach it's maximum size and will be ready for you.

Does the Vaya Hybrid have to be off-gassed?

Although the Vaya Hybrid is CertiPUR-US certified guaranteeing the amount of volatile organic compounds it contains is minimal, the moment the mattress is unpacked, it'll release some gas containing these compounds. You'll discern a faint odor, which will dissipate along with the gas in no more than a couple of days. You should leave your room window open to accelerate this process of off-gassing. In any case, it's important to stress that volatile organic compounds are non-toxic and pose no risk to your health.

Does the Vaya Hybrid need a special foundation?

The Vaya Hybrid fits most of the foundations available on the market on condition that they're firm enough to carry its weight. If you opt for a box spring, you'll have to lay under the mattress a flat board of moisture-resistant plywood to improve support and prevent the accumulation of moisture. Using plywood is also required according to the terms and conditions of the warranty.

Can the Vaya Hybrid be flipped?

No, the bottom layers of the mattress are made of coils and high-density poly foam not meant for sleep.

Is the Vaya Hybrid environmentally-friendly?

The foam in the mattress is CertiPUR-US certified. This promises that it doesn't contain materials which may risk human health or cause damage to the environment. Equally important, Vaya follows strict guidelines whose goal is to minimize the emissions of volatile organic compounds.
