Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid Video Review

Mattress Construction

The Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid mattress is 12'' thick and comes in three firmness versions: Plush, Medium and Firm. It consists of four layers of different types of foam meant to provide sleepers with pressure relieving contouring and bounce side by side with a robust coil system supporting the mattress as a whole.

What distinguishes the Sparrow's 3 firmness versions from one another is the ILD of the foam in the comfort layer (see below). The higher this ILD, the firmer the mattress becomes.

The layers of the Nest Sparrow

Cover: Soft and gentle fabric made of phase-change materials designed to draw heat away from sleepers' body.

Comfort Layer 1: 1'' of ultra-conforming gel infused memory foam providing enhance pressure relieving contouring. The gel adds cushioning and breathability to the foam augmenting comfort as well as facilitating moisture wicking.

Comfort layer 2: 3" of denser and highly elastic proprietary Energex poly foam generating latex-like lift and bounce side by side with pressure relief. This foam comers in three increasing density and firmness levels: 10, 20 and 28 ILD in the Plush, Medium and Firm versions respectively.

The Energex poly foam is inserted into a case, which can be opened with a zipper enabling you to easily replace the mattress' comfort systems in order to renew it (see Lifetime Renewal Exchange below).

Transition Layer: 1" of harden 30 ILD polymer-structured SmartFlow Foam generating support while also enabling sleepers' body gradual transition from the softer foam layers above the the robust coil layer below.

Support Layer: 6" of individually wrapped steel coils providing medium – strong 16 gauge support adding bounce to the mattress and curbing excess sinking. The Twin size mattress contains 544 coils while the King size contains a maximum number of 1,032 coils.

Base Layer: 1'' of highly dense poly foam supporting the coils as they compress.

Feel

The phase-change technology incorporated into the cover fabric of the Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid keeps its surface cool and dry.

Obviously, the different firmness versions of the mattress have deep effect on the way sleepers will experience it with the Plush model being softer and cushier, the Firmer being harder and more supportive and the Medium providing an in-between feeling.

Generally speaking, the Sparrow delivers a sound balance of contouring and support. The upper comfort layer is highly contouring. The 1'' memory foam doesn't immediately resumes its former state when it's compressed and so it completely wraps the body, relaxes the muscles and joints and mitigates everyday aches and pains.

At the same time, the resilient and springy Energex poly foam in the 2nd comfort layer resembles the effect generated by latex making the mattress bouncy and responsive.

The hardened foam in the transition layer and the 6'' coils below provide additional bounce and lift making sleepers feel 'on' instead of 'in' the mattress.

Pressure Relief

Lightweight side sleepers will probably prefer the Sparrow's Plush model. It's softness will provide them with the pressure reliving experience they require and will make them feel highly comfortable.

Side sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds should opt for the Medium model. The soft gel memory foam in the first comfort layer will deeply contour the sensitive areas in their body (the shoulders and hips in particular) prone to pressure while, at the same time, the denser and flexible Energex poly foam in the second comfort layer will produce ample lift and bounciness necessary for maintaining proper spinal alignment. Finally, the high-density foam in the transition layer and the coils in the support layer will make them feel stable lying on the mattress.

XL people who sleep on their sides will prefer the more supportive Sparrow's Firm model. It'll better carry their weight preventing excess sinking, which may lead to discomfort and pain.

Back sleepers require a mattress sufficiently firm to support their lumbar and thoracic back. Therefore sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will tend to like the Sparrow's Medium version. The two types of foam in the upper and lower comfort layers will create a combined effect of contouring and bounciness, which will help ease spinal pressure. The coils will intensify the mattress' bounciness helping these sleepers maintain a healthy posture.

Plus-size back sleepers usually prefer a more robust mattress capable of curbing over-sinking. The Sparrow's Firm model will be more suitable for their heavier body as it is for their XL side sleeper counterparts.

Stomach sleepers tend to sink in their abdomen area and so they need a mattress capable of supporting this area. The Plush Sparrow version will fail to provide that support. The Medium version, on the other hand, will be able to curb excess sinking thanks to the interaction between the more resilient 20 ILD Energex poly foam in the comfort layer and the coils.

Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 150 pounds will get the best sleep experience lying on the Sparrow's Firm model. The cushioning provided by the soft memory foam in the upper comfort layer will envelop their abdomen mitigating pressure in their lumbar spine and hips. The mattress' high firmness level will prevent over-sinking and curvature disorders in the long run.

Extremely overweight stomach sleepers, especially those who weigh close to or more than 300 pounds, may need a mattress which is more massive than the Sparrow. They should check out these special mattresses for heavy people.

One last note, since the Sparrow's King and California King sizes have a dual split option with different firmness for each side, you can create a mattress that simultaneously fits two sleeper types and weights, which is ideal for you and your spouse.

A Nest Sparrow mattress comes in 3 different levels of firmness

Motion Isolation

The Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid isolates motion quite well. Its foam-based comfort layers absorb a large portion of the kinetic energy generated by sleepers' movements. In addition, the coils are individually wrapped and move independently, which significantly reduces their capacity for transferring motion.

The denser the Energex poly foam in the comfort layer is, the more responsive and bouncy it gets and, accordingly, its ability to dampen motion is hampered. That is why the Sparrow's Plush model isolates motion better the the Medium version, which in itself isolates motion better than the Firm model.

Repositioning

The comfort layer in the Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid provides excellent contouring, which may come at the expense of ease of movement as sleepers may be trapped in the mattress. It's more severe with the soft Plush model compared to the Medium and Firm models due to greater sinkability.

On the bright side, both the hardened SmartFlow Foam in the transition layer and the coils generate enough lift to prevent over-sinking. All in all, sleepers, especially the heavier ones, may experience mild to moderate difficulty upon changing sleep positions or getting out of bed.

Edge Support

The Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid's Medium and Fair models provide fair edge support. The dense 20 and 28 ILD Energex poly foam in the comfort layer, the denser 30 ILD SmartFlow Foam in the transition layer and the coil system work together to make the mattress' perimeter stable for sleepers.

In the Plush model, the Energex poly foam in the comfort layer is too soft for the SmartFlow Foam and the coils below to counter. As a result, sleepers will experience sagging and will feel less secure sleeping near the edge. The problem is more severe with those who weigh more than 150 pounds. They'll be forced to move to the more stable center of the mattress reducing their potential sleep surface.

Heat Retention

The body conforming foam in the Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid's comfort layer is more susceptible to heat retention in comparison to more responsive and bouncier materials, such as latex. To counter that, the mattress is designed to provide efficient temperature regulation.

The phase-change materials the cover fabric is made of draw heat away from sleepers' body. The gel in the memory foam under this fabric enhances breathability and assists in moisture wicking. The 6'' coils enable free flow of air into and out of the mattress intensifying the cooling effect. To make a long story short, the Sparrow will provide you with a pleasantly cool sleep environment even if you live in hot and humid areas.

Our Mattress Reviewer's Comment

This Nest Sparrow Signature mattress was gifted to a real family, in return for photos, videos, and a personal account. You have seen the media, and now here is how they experienced the mattress, in their own words:

The mattress arrived within a few days, it was packed very well and was a breeze to open and unpack. It is a bit heavy so an extra set of hands would go a long way to make it easier.

The quality of the materials is excellent. It is very comfortable, and has great heat dissipation.

The Bottom Line

The Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid mattress effectively combines plush comfort with strong support providing you with an upgraded and healthy sleep experience. It seems that its designers did their best to cater for sleepers' most vital needs in terms of motion isolation, edge support and especially high cooling capacity.

Equally important, these designers have exerted a lot of effort into producing an adjustable mattress which comes in three firmness versions making it suitable for multiple sleeper types and weights. The dual firmness option also contributes to the mattress' adjustability and versatility enabling two sleepers with different needs to get the most out of it.

FAQ

Where is the Nest Bedding Sparrow manufactured?

Nest Bedding manufactures its mattresses, the Sparrow is included, in Phoenix, Arizona.

How do I set up the Nest Bedding Sparrow ?

The Sparrow will be delivered to your doorstep packed in several boxes containing the mattress parts. Carry the boxes to the room in which you intend to place the mattress and unpack them. Use the opener to unwrap the plastic covering the mattress parts so they can expand. Unzip the top quilt of the cover and roll it towards the back. Place the layers inside the cover one on top the other. Make sure the edges of the layers line up with the bottom seam and the corners of the cover. Finally, roll the top quilt over and zip the cover.

Does the Nest Bedding Sparrow need to be off-gassed?

Since the sparrow is shipped compressed in a box, the moment you unpack it, its foam will emit gas containing volatile organic compounds. The gas might have a distinct odor but it's non-toxic. It'll dissipate in a day or two. Keeping your room window open will improve air circulation and expedite off-gassing.

Does the Nest Bedding Sparrow require a special foundation?

The Sparrow is compatible with most of the foundations, frames and adjustable bases you'll find on the market on condition that they're solid enough to support its weight. To prevent over-sinking, don't use a foundation with flexible slats. Moreover, make certain the slats are no more than 4'' apart.

Can the Nest Sparrow be flipped?

No, the Sparrow's bottom layers consist of coils and hardened foam which provide support and add durability to the mattress. They're not designed for sleep.

Is the Nest Sparrow eco-friendly?

The Sparrow is CertiPUR-US. That means the foam it's made of doesn't contain any substances which may pollute the environment or pose any risk to sleepers' health

Are there any financing options for purchasing the Nest Bedding Sparrow?

There are three financing options available to you. Through Shop Pay, you can split your purchase into flexible installment payments. You can use Affirm to finance your purchase over 3, 6 or 12 months with 0% APR or over 18 and 24 months with interest.
