Mattress Construction

The Leesa Original mattress is made up of 3 distinct layers of different types of foam, granting it several qualities that people who prefer a firm yet comfy bed will appreciate.

The layers of the Leesa Original mattress

Cover Layer: White and gray cover made of foam and fabric gives the mattress a bit more cushion, and makes it feel softer while not affecting its general level of firmness. Silky-smooth, sturdy and stretchy, and is machine washable.

Layer 1: Made up of a soft quick-responding foam. Quite breathable, so doesn't retain much heat.

Layer 2: Made up of a moderately dense slow-responding memory foam. Contours to your body and allows for better pressure relief, especially when sleeping on one's side. Pretty low density for a memory foam transitionary layer, but will still perfectly support anyone under 250 lbs.

Layer 3: Supportive base layer made out of a firm foam. Extremely durable and dense, this layer makes sure the first two layers don't get to condensed while you're sleeping on top of them, and thus ensures the mattress doesn't feel to hard.

Feel

This mattress is firm enough that you'll feel like you're sleeping on top of it instead of in it. It has a fairly shallow cushioning depth, and contours enough to your body without smothering you. Comfy, but firm.

Pressure Relief

For back and front sleepers, this mattress will be perfectly supportive and will easily keep your spine aligned throughout the night. There is, however, a concern that make this mattress less than perfect for side sleepers — light and curvy individuals may not sink enough into the first layer of the mattress to feel the support of its second memory foam layer, and could experience less than ideal spinal alignment.

Motion Isolation

While you might feel your partner moving if you're awake, the Leesa Original's motion isolation is good enough that your partner will basically need to jump up and down on the bed to disturb your sleep.

Repositioning

The Leesa Original's first layer is extremely responsive, and has a little bit of surface bounce, letting anyone sleeping on the mattress reposition themselves quite easily. Good for people who move about while they sleep and for other late night activities. The Leesa Original is still a memory foam mattress, though. It isn't made of latex, and has no springs, so ease of repositioning is not its best quality.

Edge Support

The edge of the mattress supports weight quite well, so you'll be able to sleep even on the edge without feeling like you're going to fall of the bed. For a foam mattress, this is surprisingly good.

Heat Retention

A memory foam mattress tends to retain heat, and the Leesa Original isn't specifically constructed to better dissipate body heat (like, say, the Nectar Premier Copper is) aside from its breathable first foam layer. Thankfully, the mattress doesn't fully conform to your body due to its firmness and therefore lets your body more easily dispel its own heat through its surface area. It's not perfect, but, once again, it performs extraordinarily well for a foam mattress in this regard.

Frame & Foundation

When purchasing the mattress, you can also get a Leesa Foundation for $239-$399 (depending on the model) or a Leesa Platform Bed for $399-$699 (depending on the model). They are both slat-based, made with high-quality wood, beautifully upholstered with grey twill fabric, easy to assemble with no tools required, and perfectly fit the mattress.

The Leesa Original is also perfectly compatible with adjustable bases. You can purchase one for $1,249-$2,299 (depending on the model) from the Leesa company website, which has a wireless remote to elevate or recline the head and foot portions of the bed. You also have the option of a split-King setup with two Twin XLs to make each side independently adjustable.

In addition, you can also purchase a metal frame for the bed for $129-$149 (depending on the model), though these are not always in stock. These are made of high quality steel and fit all standard bed foundations.

Additional Details

The Leesa Original mattress is 100% handcrafted and made-to-order in the USA. All the materials used in its construction are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning that it is made with zero substances that are harmful to you or the environment, such as PBDE flame retardants or ozone depleters.

Leesa is also B-Corp Certified. Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. As a company, Leesa's practices are exemplary, and anyone looking to buy a mattress from a more forward-thinking and compassionate company will find Leesa to be exactly that.

Shipping & Delivery

The mattress usually arrives within a week or two of placing an order. The mattress will be compressed, sealed in plastic, and mailed via FedEx Ground directly to your doorstep. After removing the packaging, the bed will expand to its full size. You are advised to let the mattress "off-gas" for a day, as it takes time for the factory smell to evaporate.

For customers in Canada, Germany, and the UK, extra shipping charges apply. More information about delivery time and shipping charges to international addresses can be found on the Leesa company website.

Returns & Warranty

Leesa provides a 10-year warranty for its all its mattresses. The warranty must be claimed by the original purchaser of the mattress. Replacing the mattress carries no extra fees. There is also a 3-5 year warranty on the bed foundation (depending on the model) you might purchase with your Leesa mattress. Damage to either that is caused by the purchaser (such as stains, rips, cuts or tears) will void the warranty.

Customers have a 100 nights to test out their mattress, and can request for it to be returned after 30 days of use, to make sure that their dissatisfaction wasn't due to them not being used to it. Once the return process is confirmed, the mattress will be taken by a courier service. Refunds can take up to 10 business days to be processed. Unless the mattress is damaged, customers are always eligible for a full refund, though purchasers in Alaska and Hawaii will be charged a $100 fee for mattress returns.

The Bottom Line

Taking Leesa's fantastic discounts into account, the Original is perhaps one of the best memory foam mattresses currently on the market in terms of cost. It's fantastic for anyone looking for a medium-firm mattress that doesn't let you sink into it too much, and especially for those who are neither very light or very heavy.

If you're looking for such a mattress at a reasonable price, this is a very good option for you. If you also want the mattress to be perfectly compatible with an adjustable base, then this is probably the perfect mattress for your needs.
