Mattress Construction

The Natural latex is available in two sizes, 7'' and 9''. These two sizes share similar construction of a cover, two comfort layers and a support layer on the medium firmness side and a cover, one comfort layer and a support layer on the firm side.

The layers of the Latex for Less Natural Latex mattress

Cover: The two sides of the mattress are covered by ultra-soft organic cotton fabric which is stressed and not woven. This fabric is highly breathable effectively wicking away warm air.

The Medium Firmness Side

Comfort Layer 1: Plush organic wool maximizing sleepers' comfort. The wool functions as a natural fire barrier. It's also breathable and, so, assists in cooling the mattress.

Comfort Layer 2: Medium density organic Talalay latex, which is responsive and cushy allowing moderate sinking.

The Firm Side

Comfort layer: The same Plush organic wool found in the first comfort layer of the medium firmness side.

Both Sides' Support Layer

The bottom layer of both sides consists of 6'' hardened (85 density) organic Dunlop latex. The 9'' model comes with an additional 2'' layer of hardened (75 density) organic Dunlop latex. The high density Dunlop latex curbs sinkage by delivering strong supportive bounce and adds durability to the mattress as a whole.

Feel

The difference between the Natural Latex's medium firmness and firm sides is a bit more discernible while sleeping on the 9'' model compared to the 7'' model, but apart from that both models give a similar feel.

The soft and breathable cotton fabric cover has a smooth and pleasant texture. It keeps the surface of the mattress dry and cool. The plush wool-based layer on the mattress' two sides enhances comfort.

The medium Density Talalay latex layer on the medium firmness side provides rejuvenating cushioning, which soothes the muscles, especially after a long active day. The responsiveness of the latex keeps sleepers 'on' the mattress instead of 'in' it. The strong lift generated by the hardened Dunlop latex in the support layer further curbs sinking and increases sleepers' stability.

With no softer Talalay latex comfort layer, The Natural Latex's firm side is much stiffer. Sleepers are immediately exposed to the hardened Dunlop latex in the support layer with nothing to mitigate it. This gives a sense of minimum cushioning and maximum supportive lift.

Pressure Relief

The Natural Latex's medium firmness side is excellent for side sleepers of all weights. The soft wool in the first comfort layer and the cushy Talalay latex in the second comfort layer will target their hips and shoulder mitigating pressure. The hardened Dunlop latex in the support layer will prevent excess sinking, especially when it comes to heavier sleepers.

The Natural Latex's medium firmness side also works well for back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds. The wool and the medium density Talalay latex will cushion their lower back alleviating pressure. This latex's increased flexibility will also target their middle back keeping it in its natural position. Lastly, the hardened latex in the support layer will effectively counter any excess sinking caused by the softer layers above it.

Back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds will require a sturdier sleep platform capable of supporting their more massive body. The firm side of the Natural Latex will deliver the support they need and enable them a healthy and comfortable night's sleep without plunging too much into the bed.

Light weight stomach sleepers will feel highly comfortable lying on the mattress' medium firmness side. The soft wool and the springy Talalay latex will function as shock absorbers averting the build up of pressure in their abdomen and lumbar back while the supportive bounce delivered by the Dunlop latex below will keep their spine properly aligned.

The softer comfort layer of the Natural Latex's medium firmness side will cause stomach sleepers heavier than 150 pounds to sag too deep into the mattress, especially in the area under their rib cage. As a result, their spine will be thrown out of its natural alignment, and they may suffer from discomfort and pain. The firm side of the mattress will give them adequate support necessary for averting excess sinking.

Motion Isolation

The Natural Latex's medium firmness side curbs motion better than the firm side as a result of being softer and cushier. However, as a whole, the mattress doesn't do a good job isolating sleepers' movements. The latex it's built from is responsive and bouncy and, therefore, has high capacity for motion transfer compared to foam.

Practically speaking, if your partner is a restless sleeper, you may need to look for a more contouring mattress which can better absorb the energy generated by his/her movements.

Repositioning

The Natural Latex excels when it comes to ease of movement. Its springy latex layers keep sleepers from being stuck in the mattress and make it possible for them to change sleeping positions with minimum effort.

The firm side enables easier repositioning due to reduced sagging and is therefore highly recommended for XL sleepers.

Edge Support

The Natural Latex offers good edge support. The bounce generated by its latex makes sleepers feel stable lying on its perimeter.

The 7'' model has more solid edges due to its lower profile. The mattress' firm side on both the 7'' and 9'' models is also characterized by stronger edges as it lacks the cushy Talalay latex comfort layer, which is more sinkable. As in the case of repositioning, plus-size sleepers should opt for the firmer side with its more stable perimeter.

Heat Retention

The Natural Latex effectively regulates temperature. The breathable cotton cover and the wool-based comfort layer on both sides of the mattress help wick away moisture from sleepers' body.

The firm side is less sinkable, and so it less susceptible to heat retention than the medium firmness side. Yet, the Talalay latex comfort layer on the medium firmness side, which tends to trap heat, is aerated and so cools down quickly. In short, both sides of the Natural Latex provide a cool sleep environment and are excellent for people who sleep hot or live in hot and humid areas.

Frame & Foundation

The Natural Latex is compatible with most of the foundations, frames and adjustable bases available on the market. If you use a slat bed, it must have strong metal central support or at least 5 hardwood slats. The slat shouldn't be more than 3'' apart. Latex for Less manufactures and sells its own sleep platforms.

The Latex for Less Foundation is an easy to assemble slat bed made of natural spruce wood and removable and washable organic cotton cover. The foundation is available in two heights of 5.5'' and 7.5''. It's shipped for free within the contiguous USA and is backed by a 5-year warranty. Its prices range from $336 for a Twin mattress and $486 for a California King mattress (the 7.5'' regular profile).

The Latex for Less Adjustable Base enables head incline of up to 60 degrees and foot incline of up to 45 degrees. It also comes with three preset positions (zero gravity, anti-snore and flat), two programmable positions, whisper-quiet motors, a programmable wireless remote and custom positions for each side of the bed for a Split King mattress.

The base is shipped to any place within the contiguous USA at no charge and is backed by a 15-year prorated warranty. Its minimum price is $1,699 for a Twin XL mattress (it doesn't fit a Twin mattress). Its maximum price is $2,299 for a Split King mattress.

The warranty doesn't cover bent border/grid wires and accidental damage, such as burning marks or stains. It becomes annulled if the law label is removed, if the mattress is ill-treated (e.g. it's cleaned with liquid cleaning fluids or is bent and folded) and if it's placed on a foundation which is insufficiently supportive. The mattress doesn't need to be flipped routinely to maintain warranty protection.

The Bottom Line

The Natural Latex is a high quality mattress providing upgraded sleep experience characterized by improved supportive bounce, ease of movement, stable edges and reduced heat retention. It's one of the few mattresses on the market which offers two firmnesses making it fit sleepers with different needs and of different weights. Lastly, many buyers will appreciate the fact that it meets stringent standards of sustainability and environmental protection.
