Mattress Construction

Underneath the Sunset soft touch cover, the Sunset has three layers, the comfort layer, transition layer and foundation layer.

A detailed look at the Helix Sunset's mattress' construction and layers

Cover: The cover is made of a soft, stretchable and light material that encourages breathability.

Layer 1: The comfort layer is made out of Memory Plus Foam. The blend is an original Helix memory foam blend and has a soft, smooth feel that provides joint relief and a hugging, contouring effect.

Layer 2: The transition layer exists for the purpose of providing a soft, cushioning feel as well as transitioning the mattress from memory foam to spring coils.

Layer 3: The foundational layer is made out of hundreds of little wrapped wire coils. These coils produce the bounce effect as well as add to the hugging feel of the mattress. They are reinforced around the sides of the bed to provide a sturdy edge support. Edge support is very important if you're sleeping with a partner because it gives the bed a more spacious feel.

Layer 4: Underneath the springs, there's a layer of dense foam which effectively supports the entire mattress. This DuraDense Foam is aptly named, and prevents your mattress from moving or the springs from damaging the bed's foundation.

Feel

The Helix Sunset is very much on the softer side of the spectrum. It's plush with noticeable sinkage, yet not so much as to make you feel trapped and unable to move, thanks to its coiled springs.

If you prefer soft mattresses then you'll love the Helix Sunset. It gives a strong sinking and hugging feeling, yet still has a lot of bounce, which eases moving on it and off of it.

Pressure Relief

The top two layers of the Helix Sunset are well-suited for pressure relief, as they're soft enough to perfectly contour to the curvature of your body, allowing your hips and shoulders to stay while you sleep on your side or on your back.

Motion Isolation

The Helix Sunset features pocketed coils, which are springs that are individually wrapped in separate fabric pockets. This allows for you to move without disturbing the rest of the mattress. These also muffle the noises made by the springs. Overall great for sleeping with a partner.

Edge Support

The Helix Sunset mattress has a reinforced perimeter to provide edge support, so even sleeping on the very edge of the bed with this mattress is not only doable but even rather comfortable.

Repositioning

The third layer of the mattress has innersprings that allow for easy repositioning during sleeping. This isn't as great as it is in firmer mattresses that are made of less playable materials, though.

Heat Retention

The Helix Sunset is topped with a polyester cover to increase airflow, mitigating the heat retention of the memory foam and giving an overall cooler sleep. If you have problems sleeping hot, the Helix Sunset might be an option worth looking into.

Frame & Foundation

With your mattress purchase, you can add a foundation and a frame if you lack them. The Helix foundation is made of 7.5” birch wood, upholstered with woven upholstery fabric. It's simply designed, can be built and broken down in only 2-3 minutes, and, like the mattress, is completely made in the USA. The foundation costs $249.

The frame, while mostly decorative as with any other bed frame, features hardened steel with injection-molded, fiberglass-infused resins to provide sturdy and durable support. It can support up to 2,500 lbs with zero motion transfer or noise, and takes mere minutes to assemble. Works with most bolt-on headboards. Adding it to your purchase will cost you an additional $150.

These aren't always available for all mattress sizes, so take that into consideration.

Helix LUXE Upgrade

Helix has a line of luxury mattresses that feature hotel-quality feel and support. These LUXE mattresses are basically the same mattress but with added features that add a zoned lumbar support, an extra breathable cover, and additional comfort layers for those who prefer more cushioning. They also feature a premium quilted pillow top for plush comfort, which adds additional foam cushioning to provide comfort, but not sink. This cover is made from environmentally friendly TENCEL fibers from Eucalyptus trees. It is extra soft to the touch and has enhanced breathability to keep you cool at night and provide best-in-class moisture wicking.

The Helix Sunset LUXE mattress

Moreover, the Helix Sunset LUXE mattress features an 8" individually pocketed coil unit that has zoning technology built into the coils, replacing the default third layer with one that better supports your lumbar region. The coils underneath your shoulders provide a softer feel, while the coils under your hips provide a firmer feel to help cradle your body and align your spine. The zoning provides best-in-class support in the places you need it most, and better spine alignment is associated with lessened back pain. Since this layer also features more springs, the mattress also ends up feeling more supportive overall.

The Helix Sunset LUXE is 2" higher than the regular Helix Sunset due to an added layer of Gel Visco memory foam for pressure relief, which comes in addition to the layers of Memory Plus Foam, Helix Dynamic Foam and high-grade polyfoam.

The warranty for Helix LUXE mattresses is 15 years instead of the standard 10.

Additional Details

Helix not only boasts low price points for its products, such as the Sunset mattress, but often offers special deals and discounts. For instance, at the time of this review, Helix offered between $100 to $200 off your purchase (depending on how much you're spending) plus two Helix Dream pillows, which are adjustable pillows with two inserts and a gusset on the top and bottom. The gusset and inserts are filled with a combination of memory foam and down alternative, which is preferable for folks with allergies to feathers.

In addition, each Helix mattress is 100% US made, so if that's something you take into consideration, know that the Sunset mattress is hand-assembled and custom-built in Helix facilities throughout the United States.

Shipping & Delivery

All Helix products are shipped for free around the US. The shipments are free and arrive 1-2 weeks after purchasing your selected mattress. Once a mattress is purchased customers receive a confirmation and an itemized receipt.

Returns & Warranty

Helix offers a 100 night trial on all of their mattresses. If you are still unsatisfied you may return the mattress for a full refund. Helix requires that you at least try your mattress for a minimum of 30 days in order to ensure that returning the mattress is in everyone's best interest (memory foam can start off rather stiff but softens considerably over time).

Aside from the mattress, you may also receive a bed frame from Helix, but this is not returnable. It does, however, have a 20 year warranty.

All Helix mattresses come with a 10 year warranty. For the deluxe and plus sized mattress, the warranty is 15 years. The warranty is only covered for those who reside in the US and the warranty can only be claimed by the person whose name is on the receipt. The warranty only covers regular wear and tear that happens to a mattress. Basically, if the layers fall by an extra inch or if the mattress starts to deform over time then you may make warranty claim. If the defect was in any way caused by the sleeper, then the warranty becomes void. In a case where the warranty is accepted, you will be provided the same mattress or a similar, yet pricier one (such as the Sunset LUXE), in case the mattress is no longer in stock.

An Up-Close Look at The Helix Sunset

Bottom Line

If you're a side sleeper and you like a feeling of laying in a soft nest made of pure comfort, then this should suit you quite well. You should also seriously consider it if you prefer sleeping on your back, since, while there are better options out there firmness-wise, the construction of the mattress allows for a very comfortable back sleep, if a bit of sinkage doesn't bother you.

Also, if you tend to get hot while sleeping and are wary of foam mattresses due to this, the polyester cover does solve much of this, if not entirely so.

Still, for the price and warranty and return policy, this is a great deal that will fit some like a glove and won't blow apart one's mattress budget.
