Last updated May 01, 2024

As its name suggests, the Helix Plus mattress is specifically made for plus-sized individuals, giving them the comfort and support that standard mattresses don't. This hybrid mattress is constructed with an additional support layer and the highest density foam to provide the comfort and durability for heavier people. If you find yourself struggling to feel comfortable or supported on most beds due to sinkage, then the Helix Plus was made for you.

Mattress Construction

The Helix Plus mattress is comprised of several layers of dense memory foam and pocketed coils, and is designed to provide comfort and support to people who weigh more than 250 lb., while still being very comfortable and supportive for those who don't.

The layers of the Helix Plus mattress

Cover Layer: The Helix Plus hybrid mattress is made of ultra-breathable Tencel fibers, designed to increase airflow and to keep sleepers cool.

Layer 1: The comfort layer is made of ultra dense memory foam uniquely designed to relieve pressure points. This extra-durable Helix blend memory foam has the proper firmness level to support heavyset individuals.

Layer 2: The support layer is made of a dense latex-foam hybrid alternative to combat sinkage, contour to the sleeper's body, and support the correct sleep position for plus-size sleepers.

Layer 3: The transition layer is made of firm memory foam and is mainly intended to provide ergonomic cushioning while serving as a barrier between the layers of memory foam and the mattress' coils. This layer has a higher indention force deflection (or IFD) to properly support bigger body types.

Layer 4: The body shape layer is made of hundreds of extra large individually wrapped coils that can cradle and support heavier weight, as well as bigger sleepers. A reinforced perimeter provides great edge support, even for bigger sleepers.

Base Layer: The bottom foam layer of the mattress is made of Helix' trademarked DuraDense Foam, providing base support and durability to the entire mattress. This layer prevents the mattress from moving on its foundation and protects it from the layer of coils.

Feel

The feel of the mattress very much depends on your weight due to how it's constructed. The designers of the Helix Plus smartly built it to have a medium-firm feel for anyone over 250 lb., while anyone lighter than that would experience the mattress as a typical firm mattress. It is designed in this way so the mattress isn't only comfortable to heavyset people, but to their potential partners as well.

Thanks to the construction of the mattress, you won't feel any sort of "bottoming out" effect that you would likely feel on other mattresses due to your heavy mass. The first layers are dense and supportive enough so you won't reach the transitionary (third) layer without trying.

While the mattress has a memory foam feel, it is overall very responsive and bouncy, especially when you lay on it with your full body.

Pressure Relief

The mattress is soft enough so your curves will properly sink into it, yet firm enough so they won't sink in too much. This keeps your back aligned and provides excellent lumbar support and pressure relief. This is true for both back and side sleepers, especially for big individuals. Heavyset stomach sleepers may require a firmer mattress, though, as this mattress is only firm enough for people under 250 lb. to comfortably sleep on their stomach.

Motion Isolation

The Helix Plus mattress has very good motion isolation, which isn't surprising since it is made with individually wrapped pocketed coils, which move independently of one another. Even when weighing over 200 lb. and jumping in bed, the motion will barely be felt on other parts of the mattress.

Repositioning

Ease of repositioning on a hybrid mattress is usually high, and this is no different on the Helix Plus. The high responsiveness of the mattress makes moving around on it very easy, which is great for heavyset people and anyone who uses their mattress for more than sleep.

There is a soft crinkling sound when moving on top of the mattress, but it's not very noticeable.

Edge Support

The edge support of the Helix Plus mattress is particularly good thanks to the perimeter of reinforced coils in its fourth layer. Even people weighing over 300 lb. could comfortably sit on its edge without feeling like they're about to fall off of it.

Heat Retention

The mattress benefits from its numerous layers of foam, which help distribute your body heat throughout it. It's designed with heat dispersion in mind, with the cover being made of special breathable material that has great heat dissipation qualities.

On top of that, the mattress' pocketed coil layer has no foam encasement to trap heat, so is great at further dissipating your body heat.

Frame & Foundation

With your Helix Plus mattress purchase, you can add a foundation and a frame if you lack them. The Helix foundation costs $249, is made of 7.5” birch wood, and is upholstered with woven upholstery fabric. It's simply designed, can be built and broken down in only 2-3 minutes, and, like the mattress, is completely made in the US.

The frame, costs $150, and, while mostly decorative as with any other bed frame, features hardened steel with injection-molded, fiberglass-infused resins to provide sturdy and durable support. It can support up to 2,500 lbs with zero motion transfer or noise, and takes mere minutes to assemble. The frame works with most bolt-on headboards.

Lastly, the Helix Plus is compatible with an adjustable base, which Helix offers for $750-$850 depending on its size (it needs to fit the size of the mattress). Helix doesn't currently offer an adjustable base for the Twin size mattress. This base features head and foot adjustability and built-In massage technology. It is shipped for free and has a 20 year limited warranty.

Additional Details

All foams used in the Helix Plus mattress are certified to the CertiPUR-US standard, meaning that neither they or their off-gassing are in any way harmful or hazardous to you or your pets. All Helix mattresses are also certified to the Oeko-Tex standard, which affirms that a product is free of any harmful chemicals.

In addition, the mattress comes with two free Dream pillows, which have a polyester filling (50% conjugated polyester fiber and 50% polyester microfiber) and are hypoallergenic. The Dream pillows are designed with a plush, supportive feel.

Shipping & Delivery

All Helix products are shipped for free around the US. The shipments are free and arrive 1-2 weeks after purchasing your selected mattress. Once a mattress is purchased customers receive a confirmation and an itemized receipt.

Returns & Warranty

Helix offers a 100 night trial on all of their mattresses, including the Helix Plus. If you are unsatisfied with the mattress you are free to return it for a full refund. Helix requires that you at least try your mattress for a minimum of 30 days in order to ensure that you've spent enough time with it to get adjusted to it and to break it in (memory foam can start off rather stiff but noticeably softens over time).

The Helix Plus mattress has a 15 year warranty. It is only covered for those who reside in the US and can only be claimed by the person whose name is on the receipt. The warranty only covers regular wear and tear that naturally happens to a mattress, and doesn't cover any damage done to it through misuse or neglect. In a case where the warranty is accepted, you will be provided the same mattress or a similar, though pricier one, in case the Plus mattress is no longer in stock.

Those returning the mattresses are expected to pay the full shipping and handling fees. Helix reimburses customers up to $100 for shipping costs. Helix does not charge for the delivery of the new mattress. However, depending on the size of the mattress it may not prove to be such an effective warranty.

An Up-Close Look at The Helix Plus

Bottom Line

If you're a big guy or gal and like to sleep comfortably without waking up with aches and pains, then you should seriously consider purchasing the Helix Plus. This may seem like too general of a statement, but it should only be seen as proof of this mattress' high quality and great design.

The Helix Plus mattress with support you and cradle you while fitting almost any sleeper out there. It's not designed strictly for extra large individuals, but is built to fully support them and give them the comfort they need without neglecting the needs of any other sleeper. Heavyset stomach sleepers may find this mattress to soft for their taste, but for anyone else, this piece of high-end sleeping appliance will be the luxury they spend around a third of their day with.
