Mattress Construction

The Bowery has four layers comprised of different types of foam for enhanced body-contouring and coils for bounciness and lift to prevent over-sinking.

The layers of the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery mattress

Cover: Strong polyester protecting the surface of the mattress from wear and tear.

Comfort Layer: 1'' gel memory foam giving sleepers a pleasant sinking sensation and alleviating pressure.

Transition Layer: 2'' of harder poly foam to counter the softness of the comfort layer above providing sleepers with stability by preventing excessive sinking.

Support Layer: 6'' of up to 1,032 separately encased Ascension coils which generate firm compression support and enable ease of movement. Due to the gaps between the coils, air can flow freely and cool down the mattress as a whole.

Base Layer: 1'' of high-density foam giving the mattress extra durability and supporting the coils as they compress.

Feel

How you experience a mattress is in many cases a result of your sleeping habits and a body weight. Generally speaking, the Browery Hybrid gives a plush soft feel thanks to the body-contouring gel memory foam in the comfort layer. This feel is well balanced with the bounciness created by the harder poly foam in the transition layer and the steel coils below.

Having said that, the relatively upper thin layers of foam may not be enough to keep heavyweight sleepers from sinking straight through the coils. This may lead to discomfort as a result of pressure accumulating in the hips and shoulders especially for side sleepers.

Pressure Relief

The Bowery Hybrid performs well for light and average weight back sleepers. The foam in the comfort layer will provide them with sufficient contouring to avert the accumulation of pressure especially in the lumbar area.

As their weight increases, back sleepers may experience too much sinking which can lead to back pains as a result of inadequate spinal support.

Side sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will enjoy the softness of the foam in the comfort layer. In contrast, heavier sleepers, especially those whose weight exceeds 300 pounds, may suffer from discomfort in the hips and shoulders as there isn't enough foam in the mattress to enable effective point pressure relief.

Stomach sleepers who weigh no more than 150 pounds will most likely find the mattress to be comfortable. Heavier sleepers, on the other hand, should opt for firmer mattresses, perhaps even mattresses for heavy people, especially if they're particularly big. The Bowery is too soft to curb over-sinking in the lower abdomen area.

Motion Isolation

The Bowery's capacity to isolate motion is average. Its foam layers are too thin, and it has 1,000+ coils which create some bounciness. On the bright side, these are pocketed coils which respond individually to pressure created by sleepers' movements. Practically speaking, if your partner doesn't move frantically and you're not a light sleepers, your night sleep won't be seriously disturbed.

Repositioning

The thin foam layers and the coils prevent too much sinkage and so enable easy movement on the surface of the mattress. This might not be true for heavyweight sleepers for whom the Bowery isn't firm enough to prevent excessive sinking.

Edge Support

The Bowery Hybrid doesn't offer the best perimeter support. The gel memory foam creates some sinkage and the mattress as a whole doesn't support heavy sleepers well enough. That doesn't mean you'll roll out of bed if you sleep on the edge, but you may want to move towards the center to feel more stable and, therefore, reduce your potential sleep surface.

Heat Retention

Memory foam tends to retain heat, but, fortunately, the amount of it in the Bowery is small. Moreover, it's gel-infused, so it keeps the mattress relatively cooler. The coils, on their part, enable free flow of air and, therefore, facilitate moisture wicking. Taking all of that into consideration, the Bowery does a good job at dissipating excess heat.

Frame & Foundation

You can use any type of support system that is firm enough for your new Bowery mattress. This includes box springs and slat foundations. If you opt for the latter, the slats shouldn't be more than 3''-4'' apart.

Brooklyn Bedding offers you its own foundations. The Super Duty High Rise is sold at a starting price of $129 and reaches $219 for a CA King size mattress. The Ascension Bi-Fold Foundation is a bit more expensive with prices ranging from $229 for Twin size to $329 for CA King. The Ready-to-Assemble Box feels like a box spring. It costs $249 for a Twin mattress and climbs up all the way to $369 for Cal King. You can also purchase an adjustable base for $599-$1,398 (depending on the size and type of the base), which the Bowery is compatible with.

All of these foundations offer critical center support and are especially adapted to Brooklyn Bedding's mattresses.
