Amerisleep AS5 Mattress Review

The Amerisleep AS5 is the last in a line of foam and hybrid foam and coils mattresses which consist of the AS1, AS2, AS3 and AS4. The AS5 is the thickest, softest and most expensive model. It offers deep contouring for sleepers interested in enhanced pressure relief as well as improved motion isolation and effective cooling.

The AS5 its available in an all-foam version and a hybrid foam and coils version. In this review we're going to focus on the former.

Mattress Construction

The AS5 all-foam mattress is 14'' thick. It's built from 4 layers of different types of foam fulfilling various functions from providing comfort and contouring to supporting the mattress.

Cover: Fabric made of a blend of cotton and polyester. This fabric is soft and breathable assisting in moisture wicking.

Comfort Layer 1: 3'' of highly contouring 10 ILD Bio-Pur viscoelastic memory foam. This foam has an open-cell structure which makes it highly aerated with high capacity for temperature regulation.

Comfort layer 2: 2'' of ultra-conforming 11 ILD Active Flex Foam delivering additional pressure relieving comfort.

Transition Layer: 2'' of dense and responsive 30 ILD poly foam adding bounce to the mattress to counter the sinkage generated by the comfort layers. The foam uses Surface Modification Technology (SMT) providing the body with improved 5-zone support. The foam is convoluted and breathable.

Support Layer: 7'' of hyper-dense 35 ILD poly foam supporting the mattress as a whole and curbing excessive sinking.

Feel

The gentle and breathable cover of the AS5 keeps the surface of the mattress dry and cool and gives it a plush silk-like feel.

The two soft comfort layers make the mattress sinkable and contouring. The Bio-Pur viscoelastic memory foam responses slowly to pressure and takes a while to resume its former state. Therefore, its wraps the body relaxing the muscles and joints and reliving aches and pains. In contrast, the Active Flex Foam below quickly responds to pressure and enables increased sinking, which gives a pleasant melting-into-the-bed sensation.

The hardened types of foam in the transition and support layers counter the deep sinking generated by the comfort layers preventing sleepers from feeling they're are too deeply trapped in the mattress. By doing so they restore a sense of stability.

Pressure Relief

It's important to bear in mind that the AS5 is a soft mattress and it better fits sleepers interested in pressure reliving contouring and less in firm support.

Lightweight side sleepers will feel highly comfortable lying on the mattress. It's thick comfort layers will relieve pressure in their hip and shoulders while the transition and support layer will generate sufficient lift to carry their weight.

Average weight side sleepers will also like the AS5 thanks to its body conforming foam. The SMT zoned support delivered by the poly foam in the transition layer will target their hips and lower back helping them maintain a healthy posture.

Heavyweight side sleepers will need a more solid mattress capable of curbing excess sinking. They should opt for the firmer AS3 and AS4 models.

Light back sleepers will highly benefit from the AS5 pressure relieving characteristics. The 3'' slow-responding Bio-Pur memory foam in the 1^st comfort layer interacting with the sinkable Active Flex Foam in the 2^nd comfort layer will mold to their body alleviating pressure in their thoracic and lumbar spine. At the same time the zoned SMT support generated by the foam in the transition layer will lift these areas in their back keeping them properly aligned.

Back sleepers who weigh more than 250 pounds will find the AS5 to be insufficiently supportive. They'll require a more robust mattress capable of reducing sinkage especially in their lumbar area.

The AS5 with its softer feel is less suitable for stomach sleepers. The transition and support layers aren't solid enough to prevent these sleepers from sinking too deeply into the the mattress. Those who weigh up to 150 pounds will possibly get along with the mattress, but their heavier counterparts will experience discomfort, pain and may even suffer from curvature disorders in the long run. 

Motion Isolation

The AS5 scores high in its ability to isolate motion. The 5'' comfort system of body conforming Bio-Pur viscoelastic memory foam and Active Flex Foam is more than enough to absorbs almost the entire energy generated by sleeper's movements. In addition to that, the lack of coils reduces potential motion transfer. Practically speaking, you can expect to enjoy quiet and peaceful nights even if your partner is a restless sleeper.

Repositioning

Ease of movement is the AS5's Achilles heel. The bounce and lift generated by the dense foam in the transition and support layers don't sufficiently counter the intense sinkage which stems from lying on the ultra-thick and soft comfort layers, especially when it comes to people with excess weight. Consequently, sleepers will have to exert much more effort changing sleep positions compared to latex or latex and coil mattresses. This can be very tiring for those who tend to move a lot at night.

Edge Support

One would except from a mattress such as the AS5 with its thick contouring comfort layers to be completely unstable on its perimeter. Surprisingly, it does quite well in terms of edge support. The zoned support provided by the poly foam in the transition layer helps distribute sleepers' weight more evenly when they lie on the edge reducing sinking. Adding to that the effect of the hardened foam in the support layer, sleepers will feel quite secure sleeping away from the mattress' center.

Having said that, plus-size sleepers may still experience sagging when sleeping close to the AS5's perimeter. They'll need a more robust mattress with better edge support.

Heat Retention

The AS5 is designed for effective temperature regulation. The breathable cotton and polyester cover fabric assists in moisture wicking. The open-cell structure of the Bio-Pur memory foam in the first comfort layer neutralizes and dissipates body heat. The convoluted poly foam in the transition layer creates space in the mattress allowing free flow of fresh air. 

All in all, despite the AS5's increased tendency for sinkage, the mattress manages to remain cool and dry making it a good choice for people who tend to sleep hot.

Frame and Foundation

The AS5 works well with the majority of the frames, foundations and adjustable bases sold on the market as long as they can support its weight. If you opt for a slat bed, the slats mustn't be more than 2.75'' apart. Amerisleep puts at your disposal its own sleep platforms.

The Platform Bed Frame is characterized by a modern design. It has thick hardwood slats and strong center support preventing the mattress from sagging and prolonging its life span. It can be assembled in less than 5 minutes. Starting price is $399 for a Twin mattress. Maximum price is $599 for a California King mattress. The frame is shipped for free and comes with a 1-year warranty.

The Amrisleep Bed Frame has a classic look. It's made of solid wood. Its slats are placed close enough to enable good support and far enough to maximize air flow. The frame is designed for Full, Queen and King size mattresses. Its prices are $1,199, $1,299 and $1,699 respectively. These prices include free shipping and a 1-year warranty.

The Amerisleep Adjustable Bed+ comes with a variety of features, such as full body massage, head and foot articulation (60 degrees maximum head tilt and 35 degrees maximum foot tilt), wireless remote, Alexa, Google Home and mobile app controls, three preset setting and under-bed Led lighting. You can adjust the height of the bed with 6'', 9'' or 12'' legs.

The prices you'll pay vary from $1,260 for a Twin XL mattress to $3,000 for a California King and Split King mattresses. Shipping is provided for free and it includes white glove delivery. Amrisleep provides a 10-year limited warranty for this adjustable bed.

Additional Details

Amerisleep was established in 2010. Its main production facilities are located in Rancho Cucamonga, California. This is where all its mattresses are manufactured.

All of the mattresses in the AS series are CertiPUR-US certified, indicating their foam doesn't contain ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals and any other substances which may endanger sleepers' health or threaten the environment.

Amerisleep is committed to strict guidelines aimed at at minimizing emissions of volatile organic compounds. Moreover, in order to reduce carbon footprint and provide sleepers with a healthier sleep environment, the Bio-Pur memory foam in the AS5 uses plant-based oils instead of petrochemicals prevalent in the mattress industry.

Shipping and Delivery

The AS5 will arrive at your doorstep packed, wrapped in plastic, rolled and compressed in a box in 7-10 business days from the moment you placed your order. You'll need to carry the box to the room of your choice, unpack the mattress and set it up by yourself. Amerisleep doesn't provide white glove delivery for its mattresses.

The mattress will be shipped to destinations within the contiguous USA only. That is to say, if you want it to be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii and Canada, you'll have to use a third-party delivery company and pay for their services.

Returns & Warranty

The AS5 comes with a 100-night trial and a break in period of 30 days. That is, if you don't like the mattress, you can return it for a full refund 30 nights after you got it and no later than 100 nights.

The mattress is backed by a 20-year warranty, which becomes prorated from the 11^th year onward. In the first 10 years, the company will replace the mattress in case it has a defect for free. Then, in the second 10 years, the customer will have to pay 50% of the original purchase price plus associated costs (e.g. shipping, labor and cover replacements).

The warranty applies only to the original buyer and it covers manufacturing defects like cracks in the foam. The warranty also covers indentations on the surface of the mattress which are deeper than 1'' and which are only in the middle of the mattress and not on the perimeter or in the corners.

The warranty doesn't cover natural wear-and-tear, such as decrease in the recovery characteristics of the foam and accidental damage including stains and burning marks . It'll become void if the law tag is removed or if the mattress is placed on a platform which is not supportive enough.

The Bottom Line

If you're into deep pressure reliving contouring, the AS5 is the best choice for you. Its thick comfort layer will give you all the contouring you'll need to relax your body and experience enhanced comfort. This contouring may come at the expense of support, which can be a bit problematic for plus-size people.

The mattress is also designed to reduce heat retention and remain cool despite the sinkage it generates. Its high cooling capacity makes it ideal for sleepers who tend to sleep hot or who live in hot and humid areas.
